When I saw this book, I thought "oh wow! That's a new perspective on the story of the infamous Erzsebet Bathory." I cannot explain to you how wrong I was, or how tacky this book is, or the disappointment I felt as I read through it. The synopsis of the plot here on the Amazon site makes this book sound like a generational curse of blood lust and vanity which drips down through the generations stemming from the main character's grandmother, the blood countess herself, Erzsebet Bathory. Sounds like a fun read, right? And I feel that it would have been had they stuck to this plot. Erzsebet did have children who survived her; her descendants still exist today, including some living here in the U.S. So when this book came, I was pretty excited, since I had read many non-fictional portrayals of Countess Bathory, but only one fictional version of her story. Within the first couple of hours of sitting down with this book and reading away, thinking "this is gonna go somewhere, right?" But then, to my dismay, the words vampire, werewolf, etc...made for an instant realization that I had been mislead. I know these are popular topics today, vampires and werewolves I mean, but they're not my thing, never have been. The plot is basic for vampire novels, the characters are translucent, and the dialogue... predictable at best. This is the kind of book I think people will love or hate, as there is not much middle ground for the reader to stand on. From the other reviews, its clear that if this is the kind of story and characters that you like and look for in your reading material, then, by all means, this is a book for you, however, if you are like myself and think you are buying a book with a new take on the Bathory legend within an historical context, although always allowing for liberties to be taken to move the plot along, well then, you may be disappointed. If you are looking for books on Erzsebet Bathory, I'd recommend Infamous Lady by Kimberly Craft (non-fiction), or The Countess by Rebecca Johns (fiction), but this one, not so much. If you like otherworldly creatures as the characters in your reading material, or you love those Twilight movies, or True Blood on HBO, then you are probably the demographic the author was going for.

I originally purchased this book as a gift for my granddaughter since she is a fan of vampire fiction and loves book series like "Twilight" and "The Vampire Diaries". I heard about this new author and her "Daughters of Darkness" series through Facebook and Goodreads and thought we would give it a try. Well she has yet to read it as I still have it on my nightstand and am reading it for a second time! This is such a great book! It is historically based in the early 1600s and is about a young woman, who is the granddaughter of a Hungarian countess, Elizabeth Bathory, who was a murderess and was accused of being a vampire. Katrine, the main character herself, has been turned into a vampire and her mother, Anastasia, is some sort of shape shifting werewolf. Though the premise is paranormal, this is not a typical vampire novel, the story is beautifully told and actually reminds me of a Philippa Gregory novel. You get a good feel of the time period and the places that she travels to, like Paris, and you get a really good feel for the relationships the characters have with one another. After she tries to find her grandmother, she joins up with a tribe of vampires and learns how to live a glamorous life while still being in the shadows. You will find that there is not a lot of violence or blood or gore in this book but there are some scenes that may take you by surprise. I actually really liked those occasional jarring monster scenes and thought added to the intrigue of the story. Katrine is a great heroine and reminds me a lot of "Bella Swan "as they share many similarities in their looks and personalities and the story is also narrated from her point of view. Like in "Twilight" there is a budding romantic triangle between Katrine and two suitors. One is an older more sophisticated werewolf from England, Lord Charles Westwick, and a young Italian wizard named William of Naples who is also known as the `Blue-eyed Demon'. You can tell that these two men love her and will do what it takes to win her over. Both are very charming and romantic and you wonder who she should be with. The end of the book is very interesting and surprising and tells a little more about Katrine's mother and how her character fits into the story. It ties up some loose ends about the traumatic events that take place in the beginning of the book that take Katrine on the rough journey to find out about her family lineage and seems to set up the premise for the next book to come, which I personally can't wait to read! So, again if you like books or series like "Twilight", "Vampire Diaries", "Bloodlines", "Dark Shadows", etc., you will love this!
