The book does an excellent job looking at manager selection not in isolation but within the overall investment process, i.e. it highlights the importance of developing and documenting both philosophy and process of manager selection, evaluation, and firing as part of investors’ overall investment process.
The book underlines the importance of being aware of performance cycles and the fallacy of hiring and firing managers precisely at the wrong time solely based on most recent performance. As part of the active vs. passive management debate, the author weighs in on predictability and repeatability of alpha, traits of successful managers, as well as warning signs to consider when evaluating managers. There is also some very practical advice for how to optimize a portfolio of managers along the return and bias trade-off, key attributes of manager due diligence, and insights into selecting passive and alternative asset managers. All in all, a must-have book for any investor who outsources investment management to others.
