This is a freak-out of a book. If there is a genre called gangster-thriller-horror-porno, then surely this novel should be at the top of the list. Usually I read quaint historical novels, so I was not prepared for all the filth, kinky sex and graphic violence. In fact, after reading Strings, I took a shower. I felt unclean. I'm pretty sure I've sinned in reading this very scary tale. But that's just me.
Allison Dickson has created a creepy nightmare that sticks with you long after you've finished reading it. Her characters of gangsters, hookers and monsters will lure you in with their realistic dialogue and you'll be trapped until the very last page.
Oh, and then there's Madam. Think: a red-headed Cruella de Ville on steroids. If she doesn't get your complete and undivided attention, then nothing will.
Ms Dickson is a brilliant writer. She doesn't waste a sentence. Even though this was an over-the-top scare fest, I couldn't help but to compare her with Elmore Leonard. I would love to read more of her work. Possibly a sequel with Madam?

Man, just thinking about this book after finishing it the night before gives me chills! It is super creepy and quite gory. That said, I cried at the climax, because the characters are very well done and aren't caricatures, though you may start out thinking of them that way a bit (crazy recluse, hooker with a heart of gold, conniving madam, dishonest minion...). After a few chapters, the characters have branched out a bit and you begin to see how they have become what they are and they are no longer one-dimensional in any sense. By the end, they are even more rounded out and you can commiserate with their struggles but also want to throttle them sometimes for their actions. Still, though, the horror runs through it all and keeps the shudders coming, along with the mental images that may give you nightmares! The failed relationships and regrets of the characters, main and supporting, are very realistic and well done, and that helps the not-so-crazy-for-horror reader (like me, though I do like Stephen King type horror in small doses, well spaced!) get through the gorier bits! A great story that leaves you wanting a sequel!
The first chapter was the creepiest thing I've read in a real long time. Ms. Dickson did a great job in creating a scary atmospheric suspense novel with some twists and turns but basically rather a simple straight forward plot. If I have anything negative to say I would perhaps note that the end was a little anti-climatic it should have been a lot harder to take out the evil in this story and one of the most interesting characters the madam was left a little unresolved I noted her change but unclear to what end how she actually changed was less then clear and that was disappointing. Otherwise a very good scary story I was surprised I wasn't expecting it to be so good.
Full disclosure I grabbed a copy of this book after getting to know the author a bit in real life, and I was prepared to not like it. We've all been there - someone you know writes a book or is in a play or makes strange-smelling bath soap, and you want to check it out so as not to hurt their feelings, but you're still a little hesitant.
When I am wrong, I am SPECTACULARLY wrong.
A lot of people have already commented on the vivid imagery, fleshed-out characters, and yes, the brutality of this book. What really gripped me was the tightness of the writing. Strings follows three characters, switching perspective chapter to chapter, as they all pursue their own agendas while still tied (heh) to each other. The pacing is unbelievable. With every change in narrator, I was simultaneously thrilled to go back to that part of the story, and frustrated at leaving the previous one. I've read a lot of horror/thriller types of books, but I've not seen many authors able to juggle multiple storylines this seamlessly.
The only factor that kept me from giving Strings 5 stars is that the timeline wasn't always clear. When the narration switched, I sometimes couldn't tell if events were happening one after the other, or at the same time. Minor in the scheme of things, and I can't wait for the sequel.
This is definitely one of the best horror novels I've ever read, and the best full-on horror novel by a female author that I've ever read. In a genre dominated by men, this book and this author really holds its own. There are no pulled punches and no fake-outs, and interesting, complex characters fill its pages.
I think one of the things I appreciated most is the prose. The first chapter made me shuddery enough that I had to put it down, and when I picked it up again--during a metal concert, as it happens--I couldn't put it down. It moves well, and though I was expecting to cringe through the depiction of sex work and the mob (it's not realistic, thank goodness), I definitely didn't. The characters shine through a mirror darkly and there really are no good guys here, just protagonists. I think one of the best things about it is that the villains--some of whom are protagonists--are all very well-realised and sympathetic. I love it when an author can keep you from being able to really hate someone, without excusing what they do.
You can tell I was really impressed by this one. In the interest of balance, of course, I do have to reassure the audience that no, sex work isn't much like this, and elements of it read like a dark alternate reality--easily a contemporary world to the one described in "Horrorstor", for instance. It's also very violent and disturbing--which is great!--but I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who faints easily.
There's a lot of twists and turns, and I was fully immersed in the richly described world. It's a good length, so the value is great, and it exceeded my expectations. I thoroughly recommend it, and it was one of my best reads of 2015 for sure.
