This was a surprisingly engrossing read. At first I wasn't sure if I as a reader identified with the voice of the narrator, but after only one chapter I realized I was hooked. I found the journey of the protagonist believable and endearing, and through all the characters the book manages to combine mysticism with stark reality beautifully, giving readers an accurate taste--through mini-bites here and there--of what an ordinary life in New York City looks like. Being a New Yorker myself, I can attest that the characters, whether strange, ambivalent, troubled, optimistic, forlorn, or whatever they may be...are true New Yorkers.

Beyond that, however, this book easily additionally speaks to anyone of the millennial generation: seeking guidance through jaded eyes, even finding dubious mentors.

My only criticism would be that the denouement did flag a bit for me--I almost felt that the book would have been just perfect had it ended a chapter earlier. That being said, for the debut of an author, it's very good stuff. I would consider Mabrouk someone to keep an eye on, and I'll look for his future endeavors.

The best book by far! So moving and captivating! I finished it in one whole day! I seriously could not put it down. It was exceptionally good!!!! Superb piece of work! Wow!!!
When I bought this book I was not really sure what to expect. I normally skip books like this but I was very pleasantly surprised when I started reading and it was very hard to find some time to put the book down and get myself some coffee. The story is packed with hilarious situations and some very powerful philosophies. In the middle it dragged a bit but it got me back in right on time to keep my interest.
Highly recommend this book!!! I enjoyed reading the dialogues between the two main characters and seeing Zackery grow and transform. Topics sparked up throughout the story were very deep and meaningful. Would love to see this book transform into a play or movie one day!
This is a book that I can believe will change lives. when I first discovered it I was skeptical, mostly because I didn't have an experience with the author. After I bought it at the bookstore and began reading it my surprise was obvious; this book had me hooked and sunk. Not only did it have a depth unlike any other book I have read but it was also humorous. I loved that fact that the book could make me think and laugh at the same time. The author clearly put a lot of thought into the characters. This is a perfect read for anyone who enjoys an interesting read. This is a must read.
Sublimely written and deeply moving, Shareef Mabrouk’s book, ‘Regular People of the Weak’ is a mind-blowing reading experience. The book’s title may be too unassuming, as it does not fully give justice to what you’ll find within the book’s pages. But let me just suffice it to say that this is a rare, pleasurable and intellectually provocative experience for me—and here I am speaking as someone who has read countless books.

For some reason, Shareef’s writing reminds me of New York Times best-selling author Colum McCann, specifically in the way Shareef’s writing crackles with the undeniable texture of real life. ‘Regular People of the Weak’ is something like a more cerebral or more guttural ‘Tuesdays with Morrie’ meets Guy Ritchie’s ‘Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’ and with genetic threads of Plato’s ‘Dialogues’ (especially the dynamics between Zack and the highly opinionated and world-weary Neolin), not in plot per se, but in spirit, in how the story fleshes out the dark underbelly of the human situation (Zack’s experience and flashbacks), and how at the same time it uplifts us (through Neolin’s poetry and poetic stories and rants) with its concern for the high brow and its ideas on how the world should be run.

Needless to say, Shareef’s book is a uniquely rich reading experience that is obviously cleverly written by a multitalented author—it is something that stays with you even long after you’ve finished reading it. I highly recommend this to anyone with a demanding taste for literature. Nothing but high praises for this literary achievement.
This book was totally not what I expected. From the little blurb on and some descriptions online I thought it would be about faith, Christianity, growing stronger spiritually, a spiritual journey to God, etc. Something along those lines. But it was a kinda big surprise to me, right from the first few chapters. It starts out with Zach talking to an older, wheelchair-ridden, American Indian man who he takes care of, who wants him to read his book of poems. Then he flashes back to how he got to where he is in life, starting when he was supposed to be studying to be a locksmith with his friend Anthony but instead they're blowing all their money on parties and drugs and alcohol and girls. The story travels back to him and the American Indian , Neolis, whom he takes care of to fill community service hours for his probation. Throughout the story, Zach reads poems out of a book Neolis wrote about subjects like abortion, euthanasia, death, war, religion, etc. The whole book is just so INTRIGUING and thought provoking, really challenging to read and understand at the same time... There's absolutely no way to explain it perfectly, but it's almost as if your mind is being changed or opened farther than it previously was so that suddenly you can see all this stuff about the world that you had no idea existed...
