Margaret Forster is my favourite writer. I read this book years ago and thought it worth a re-read. I was, however, disappointed. I did not find the writing as engaging as usual. The topic of how an abandoned child would value family life as an adult was interesting and personally relevant.. But I did not find the way mother and daughter interpreted the same life events was well presented by the author.
